The United Nations World Food Program (WFP), in partnership with MDO IMON INTERNATIONAL, has launched implementation of the project "Food in exchange of production facility Rehabilitation" through providing cash to vulnerable groups of population who caried out a public project activities in exchange. Financial assistance enables poor families to purchase a variety of food and consumebles at their own discretion. According to the project, the number of beneficiaries in Shahrituz and J. Balkhi districts, who receive financial assistance, has about 500 households (2,500 people) and the total cost of the project in 2 districts is about 880,000 TSJ for 4 months.
In November 2017, MDO IMON INTERNATIONAL started the implementation of this project, and on December 21, 2017, the first disbursement of funds to the beneficiaries of the project was held within the framework of this cooperation. 176 beneficiaries in Shahrituz district, selected by the World Food Program project team, received funds to participate in the labor-intensive work of rehabilitating production facilities, such as rehabilitation of canals and construction of roads. Each beneficiary received 440 somoni on his card. These funds shall be effected after 25 normative work days within 4 months period. This project will contribute in establishing family and community production facility, which reduce poverty, provide resistanse against natural desasters and contribute in providing sustanable livehood.
At the same time, cash assistance allows beneficiaries to spend their money within the community and for the development of the local economy. IMON INTERNATIONAL is currently the only microcredit deposit organization implementing the WFP project in Tajikistan. In the future, it is planned to provide cash benefits to 311 beneficiaries in J.Balkhi district.WFP plans to implement this project in 20 districts of Tajikistan. The UNWFP is the largest humanitarian organization in the world, fighting hunger worldwide, providing food in emergencies, and helping people and communities to improve nutrition and sustain stress tolerance. The UNWFP has been operating in the country since 1993 through four regional offices (in Khujand, Qurghonteppa, Gharm and Khorog) and its office in Dushanbe.
